Hydrotherapy
This is an integral part of physiotherapy. For children with movement difficulties,
water can be of tremendous benefit. Water pressure gives the child support and
allows movement otherwise not available to a child with cerebral palsy.
As the water is heated to between 30 - 32 degrees, it also has a relaxing effect
that in turn facilitates the reduction of muscle spasticity, commonly observed out
of the water.
Hydrotherapy also includes general swimming, which is an excellent way for
these children to maintain and improve their cardiovascular and muscle endurance.
Water based activity is also excellent as a recreational tool and provides a
social outlet (with the volunteers). |
